A 80 YEAR HISTORY

Built in 1930 at the Lemarchand shipyard.

•Certainly the most beautiful pleasure boats built in La Liandrais
In 1929, on the left bank of the river Rance, Louis Lemarchand managed the shipyard where the boat was born. He was the son of a carpenter, manufacturer of beautiful and strong tuna ships and pilot sailboats.
The owner was reknown in the sailing set of Saint Malo.Mr and Mrs Verliac were members of the Yacht Club de France.

.

Adrien Verliac was a pharmacist. That certainly explains the name given to the ship; Hygeia, goddess of health *. The plans were ordered to Daniel Severi, talented naval architect who knows the sea very well. He sailed for many years and doubled Cape Horn several times.

• Originally a schooner
Formerly, Hygie was a schooner of 55 tons with a length of 20.25 meters. She was Marconi rigged mainsail and mizzen gaff, staysail and jib.

The plan structure and beam filling allows us to assess the quality construction that combines strength and lightness.
The frame is mixed: oak double pairs of 80 for straight lines on three 75x60 intermediaries and a greenhouse empature
of 200x70. The beam filling is wooden made linked with generous curves. The 13.2 tonnes iron cast keel was made by Maugin and Basle in Saint-Malo.
The crowning piece designed by the architect was of such size that it forced Louis Lemarchand to go to Le Havre to pick up a ball of bulbinga, redwood of Gabon, easy to buckle under steam.

The luxurious interiors, are signed by a very select Parisian Cabinetmaking Company wich had a high reputation at the time: "Au Bûcheron".

• Designed for speed:
In the hands of her first owner Hygie has known many successes in racing, especially in the Fastnet.
In 1931, Hygie under flag of Yacht Club de France won the Cup King Edward VII on the Cowes-Dinard route for cutters to Minoru, Karin III and Gwenaloé.

This feat is represented by veering west-Bramble, full sail, starboard armor by famous painter Marin Marie.

• Many transformations over the years
In 1960 extensive changes underwent to the ship, the stern was lengthened by 70 cm, the chains were removed, the rig was changed to Marconi ketch with a great wooden mast and foremast aluminum. Another important change, a bulky roof was added.

In 1986, during a violent storm in the Gulf of Genoa, Hygie suffered serious damage and thanks to the intervention of the architect George Auzépy-Brenneur, this beautiful ketch returned to its original beauty with a Oregon pine masting by Les Baux shipyard in Sanary-sur-Mer.
To be continued…

• HYGEIA Goddess of Health
Hygeia was a beautiful and powerful goddess, responsible for human health and the daughter of Asclepius, the divine physician. She was also mistress of Cleanliness and Hygiene, which borrowed its name!
The Romans called her Salus.
The sister of Hygeia was Panacea, symbol of curative medicine. Asclepius, Hygeia and Panacea belonged to the lineage of Apollo, representing the rational mind!
